DIY Window Repair and Replacement Tips Made Easy

Have Old Windows? Know How To Prevent Condensation Formation

Do your current windows have a problem where condensation frequently forms between the glass? This can be quite an annoying problem that will make you want to rip out those old windows and replace them with new ones. Here are some tips that will help prevent condensation from forming within old windows

Use a Dehumidifier

The primary reason that your windows can have condensation collect between glass panes is because you have high humidity within your home. As the humidity levels get higher, the humid air will come in contact with the cold surface of the window, which causes the air inside to suddenly cool. When the moisture in the air between the glass panes is removed, and it leaves water behind. All it takes is small gaps in the window frame to allow this to happen, which can easily happen over years of use.

The best way to prevent this from happening is to make sure that your home has working climate controls that will remove the humidity inside. Some modern thermostats will actually let you know what your inside humidity levels are so that you can make adjustments. You should try to keep humidity levels between 25% - 40% in the winter when temperatures hit below zero. You can install a stand-alone dehumidifier to help remove moisture from the air or have a unit installed that works with your HVAC system.

Use Silica Gel

Windows with double panes of glass have silica gel that is designed to absorb moisture within the window. The gel also will keep the water out from between the glass where it can increase the humidity. Issues with water that collects around your window frame can cause the silica gel to become ineffective. If the gel cannot remove moisture, you'll have issues where condensation forms within the glass.

You can actually use your own silica gel to decrease condensation since it is sold at home improvement stores. You simply place them near windows where condensation has been a problem, and the packets should do their job at removing humidity. While not an ideal solution, it can be enough to get you through a winter with windows that are condensation free.

If you are tired of finding fixes to window condensation that won't have lasting results, then maybe it is time to get new windows. Speak to a local window contractor for a price quote to have brand new slider windows installed in your home.
